Nº165/Feng Shui Colors for the Bedroom

Feng Shui is about creating balance and harmony in our surroundings. Since the bedroom is a very important room (we spend most of our day there), many people naturally ask how to improve their bedroom through color choices based on Feng Shui. While discussing bedroom colors, it's also essential to recognize the significance of the other rooms in your home. Improving your bedroom without also enhancing the other beneficial areas of your house doesn't provide the full advantages of Feng Shui. Ultimately, Feng Shui involves balancing the energy throughout your entire environment.

That said, here are some Feng Shui tips to consider for your bedroom.

Don’t overdo the bright colors in your bedroom. Bright colors are lively and energetic, so using too many can make it harder to stay asleep. This also applies to plants and especially water. Plants and water represent yang energy and can cause the same issues as bright colors in the bedroom. The colors linked to plants and water are green, black, and blue. Bright colors to avoid include reds, strong oranges, or bright yellows. Fluorescent colors are definitely out of the question!

Pictures of moving water can also cause problems. If you have a picture of a waterfall, river, or ocean in your bedroom, it's a good idea to move it. Unfortunately, aquariums in the bedroom can also interfere with sleep and should be relocated. Although you should avoid red in the bedroom, a small touch of red can spice up your sex life! (Red is fire, so lit candles count as red.)

Dark colors (shades of brown) should be used in the dÈcor of the bedroom, but not on the walls.  Painting the bedroom walls a dark color might help you sleep, but wonít help you feel rejuvenated in the morning.  Darker colored dÈcor should be used to the point of tilting the roomís ambiance yin, without making you feel like youíre party to a funeral.  You donít have to just use browns, pick darker colors and designs that are relaxing for you.

If your room is already very dark (wood-paneled, for example) and you can't make changes to it, you might want to consider replacing any "yellow light" bulbs with brighter, whiter ones. Opening the blinds during the day will also significantly enhance the room's feeling. If it’s dark at night, balance it with brightness during the day. (Occasionally clearing the room by opening all the blinds is highly beneficial.)

When painting the bedroom, using pastel colors is your best option. The best colors to choose depend on the compass direction of the room's location. To figure out your home's compass direction, draw an outline of your house on a piece of paper and divide it into nine equal sections (three across and three down). Use a compass to find which way is north, and label each section according to its compass direction (north can be in a corner). Here are the color combinations:

- NE, Center, or SW: Rooms here should be painted with pastel earthy colors, including a light shade of yellow.

- NW or W: Rooms here benefit from metal, so use a shade of white.

- SE or E: The SE and East benefit from the color green. Use these colors only if the room will be used as a study; in that case, a shade of green would be ideal. Otherwise, opt for pastel earthy colors, including shades of yellow. White is not recommended here, as it diminishes the productive properties of the SE and East. These directions are linked to wealth.

- S: The South benefits from red. If you choose to use red here, do so sparingly, as too much can cause restlessness in bed. Use shades of white for the walls.

- N: The North benefits from blue and black (water). Since water cannot be used, try white instead, as white (metal) will support the benefits of water without actually using water.

I know this might be disappointing, as some of you reading this hoped that painting a room fluorescent orange would make you an international movie star overnight! But Feng Shui is about balance and harmony, so using light, pastel colors is your best choice when painting the walls.
