Nº188/Glass- The Known and the Unknown
Glass is an amorphous solid made from sand, silica, and soda. It is also referred to as a “supercooled liquid. " Glass can be made transparent and flat or shaped into other forms and colors.
During glass manufacturing, metals and metal oxides are added to change its color. For example, a small amount of selenium is added for decolorization, and excess selenium imparts a reddish color. A small amount of cobalt yields blue glass. Adding titanium produces yellowish- brown glass. Depending on the concentration, nickel produces blue, violet, or even black. Adding 0. 0.1 to 2% uranium produces fluorescent yellow or green. Small concentrations of cobalt (0. 0.025 to 0. 0.1%) yield blue glass.
The most familiar form of glass is the silica- based material used for windows, containers, and decorative objects. The basic ingredients of glass include silica, ash, and lime. From these basic ingredients, a variety of glass can be formed. Float or annealed glass, molten glass, plate glass, tempered glass, laminated glass, and self- cleaning glass are some varieties of glass.
At an early age, natural glass (obsidian glass) created from volcanic magma was used. To early man, obsidian glass was a very rare and valuable commodity. Obsidian glass was used as a glaze for pottery until the method of glass blowing was developed in the first century.

For example, drinking glasses, bowls, and bottles are often made of glass, as are light bulbs, mirrors, the picture tubes of televisions, and windows.
